Why is there no stop sign at the intersection of Mine and Van Buren?
Supervisor Caddigan has asked VDOT to review the intersection for a multi-way stop sign many times in the past. VDOT has again reviewed the intersection and responds with the following statement:
"The multi-way stops on Mine Road are within the Town of Dumfries and were installed by the Town as a traffic calming measure in the residential area. The intersection of Mine Road and Van Buren Road is not eligible for traffic calming. VDOT has reviewed this intersection several times and we do recognize the difficulties in making a left turn onto Mine Road.
When we reviewed the intersection we also saw the 'blind curve' you mentioned and the curve was the determining factor for not installing a multi-way stop. In the current condition Mine Road is free flow therefore there are no vehicle queues at the intersection. If a multi-way were installed there would be a vehicle queue approaching the intersection especially during the peak periods. Depending upon the number of vehicles queued there may not be enough distance for an approaching vehicle to see the last vehicle and stop. This would be a condition we cannot endorse.
We have been having conversation with both the Town of Dumfries and Prince William County about potential modifications to the area. We do not have any plans yet."
