Historic Dumfries Virginia
The history of our area reaches back to the earliest days of our nation. Captain John Smith visited Quantico in 1608. Richard Gibson erected a grist mill on Quantico Creek in 1690. The town of Dumfries was chartered on May 11, 1749 and holds the distinction of being the oldest chartered town in Virginia. In its heyday the port of Dumfries was the second busiest in colonial America, rivaling New York, Philadelphia, and Boston.
There are many history resources available on our website and on the internet, and we hope the links we have here will be helpful to you as you explore our history. If you find a link that we don't have, please contact us and we'll add to our list.
