H1N1 Update from the Virginia Department of Health

June 12 Memo from Dr. Karen Remley, State Health Commissioner

"...it is important to understand that WHO's Phase 6 alert level has nothing to do with the severity of illness that is resulting from H1N1 infection. The actual severity of illness has remained moderate, not only in Virginia but across the United States and around the world. Among the reported 107 confirmed cases of H1N1 virus in Virginia, there have been relatively few hospitalizations and only one death. Most people who have gotten sick from the virus have recovered and now doing well [sic]. We still expect that we will see more cases, more hospitalizations and even more deaths as a reault of the H1N1 virus in Virginia."

VDOT Service Level Changes

VDOT is considering a number of service level changes in reaction to declining transportation revenues. Among these service level changes are to adopt a practice of mowing three times per year on most major roadways and to restrict most mowing practices to cutting between the shoulder and ditch except for every two to four years at which time mowing to control woody growth would be done. In any case, mowing to maintain sight distance for safety at intersection and crossovers is not restricted and will be accomplished on a regular or as needed basis. We estimate that the savings generated by slightly reducing the extent and frequency of mowing will save up to $20 million annually which can be applied to investments in bridge and pavement rehabilitation which are a high priority for our maintenance program.

Parking Enforcement to Resume at 234 Commuter Lot

Recently, the PWC Police Department has withheld enforcement of violations for parking outside of the designated areas due to high demand in the lot. However, enforcement will resume during the construction phase in order to allow necessary access. Vehicles not parked in a marked designated space will be ticketed and possibly towed.

Taxi? Look for the Purple Inspection Sticker

Prince William Police Department

Did you know that the Prince William County Police Department is tasked with conducting annual vehicle and meter inspections of all Manassas and Yellow Cabs?

The 32-point vehicle inspection, and the annual meter calibration, is done to ensure the safety of taxi patrons as they use the only cabs legally allowed to pick up passengers in Prince William County. By law, only Yellow Cab, Manassas Cab, and Washington Flyer are allowed to pick up passengers in the County. Different rules may apply in the towns of Occoquan, Quantico, Haymarket and Dumfries, and residents in those jurisdictions should contact town officials for more information.

234 Commuter Lot Update

News article from the Potomac News

The Prince William Board of County Supervisors authorized a property condemnation last week that will pave the way for more commuter parking in the southern portion of the county.

The board's unanimous April 7 vote allows county officials to exercise their quick-take powers to acquire 67,000 square feet of land on Jefferson Davis Highway. The property will be used for the various easements needed to expand the park-and-ride lot at Route 1 and Route 234.

Motel razed as part of revitalization plan

Supervisor Caddigan in Excavator

Prince William County Supervisor Maureen Caddigan, R-Dumfries, climbed into the cab of a hydraulic excavator Monday morning and using the machine's bucket took the first swing at tearing down the Best Value Motel in Triangle.

As the bucket hit a steel beam, the front of the excavator was lifted off the ground before it slammed back down. The look of surprise was evident on Caddigan's face.

"That was exciting," she said. "It was like being on an amusement ride."

Public Transit Users Save More Than $8,400 Per Household Even With Dramatic Dip In Gas Prices

Even though the price of gas has continued to drop public transportation riders still enjoy a significant economic savings. A person can achieve an average annual savings of $8,416 per year by taking public transportation instead of driving, based on today's gas prices and the average unreserved parking rate, according to the American Public Transportation Association's (APTA) "Transit Savings Report."

Change is coming - to Triangle!

The tired face of Triangle along U.S. 1 is disappearing, and disappearing for good.

Over the last few months, Prince William County has razed eight of the 80 parcels of land between Joplin and Bradys Hill roads.

"Think of Occoquan and that's what we want to duplicate - a mix of neighborhood commercial uses, small multi-family houses and single families interspersed - the way small towns used to be."

"The county has put a tremendous investment into this," said Prince William Supervisor Maureen Caddigan, R-Dumfries. "When developers see the buildings are already down and the road is widened, they are going to want to come."

And that vision is to turn a roughly six-block area off U.S. 1 into the "Village of Triangle." The area is bordered by Old Triangle Road, Amidon Avenue, Squire Lane, Triangle Street, Post Street and parts of Fuller Heights Road.

Proposed Speed Limit Change on Route 234

On Route 234

Currently, Route 234 is posted at 50 mph from Van Buren Road (Rte 627) to Country Club Drive (Rte 1450). It is 55 mph from Country Club Drive to I-66 as you proceed north. We believe that the 50 mph zone should be extended past the entrances to Montclair and Forest Park HS. We recommend extending the 50 mph zone to a distance of 0.26 miles north of Carrs Brooke Way (Rte 3130).

This recommended change in speed limit has been discussed with the Virginia State Police and the Prince William County Police Department and they concur with the proposed reduction.

On Route 1

A recent safety study has prompted VDOT to recommend lowering the speed limit from 40 mph to 35 mph along the north-bound segment of Route 1 from Bradys Hill Road to Possum Point Road, a total distance of 1.63 miles. More...
