Governor McDonnell Announces Pothole Blitz

Governor Bob McDonnell today directed the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) to focus efforts during March on patching the thousands of potholes giving motorists bumpy reminders of the hard winter Virginia has endured. This winter's repeated historic blasts of snow, ice and rain coupled with colder-than-average temperatures have resulted in a proliferation of potholes on Virginia's roads.

"Motorists traveling across Virginia know best where the worst potholes lie. We want citizens to help us identify potholes as they form so that VDOT crews can quickly be dispatched to make repairs," McDonnell said.

Healthy lawns and healthy waters

Knowing that healthy lawns contribute to healthy waterways, Prince William County developed the Great Scapes program to help homeowners better manage their lawns. In an effort to emphasize the program's focus of turf rather than landscapes as a whole, Great Scapes is now the BEST Lawns program. The program's goal is to help homeowners Build Environmentally Sustainable Turf. Though the name has changed, the program is still based on years of Virginia Tech research on turf in northern Virginia region.

New Triangle Elementary Opens Doors

"Fantastic" is the best way to describe Triangle Elementary School's ribbon cutting, ceremony, and tour held on January 14. A throng of 500 excited parents and children, former Triangle students and administrators, and elementary school principals from across the county filled the school gymnasium and two overflow rooms. Eager families began arriving well before 5 p.m. for the program which was scheduled to start at 6 p.m., many anticipating their first close look at the new building which replaced a structure built in 1959.

speaking at the 234 commuter lot ribbon cutting "In this area traffic is a major concern and anything we can do to help with this issue helps the entire community. Carpools, vanpools and public transportation are all great tools to help alleviate congestion and to get people home quickly and safely. And, let's face it, life is too short to sit in traffic."

Motel razed as part of revitalization plan

Supervisor Caddigan in Excavator

Prince William County Supervisor Maureen Caddigan, R-Dumfries, climbed into the cab of a hydraulic excavator Monday morning and using the machine's bucket took the first swing at tearing down the Best Value Motel in Triangle.

As the bucket hit a steel beam, the front of the excavator was lifted off the ground before it slammed back down. The look of surprise was evident on Caddigan's face.

"That was exciting," she said. "It was like being on an amusement ride."

Change is coming - to Triangle!

The tired face of Triangle along U.S. 1 is disappearing, and disappearing for good.

Over the last few months, Prince William County has razed eight of the 80 parcels of land between Joplin and Bradys Hill roads.

"Think of Occoquan and that's what we want to duplicate - a mix of neighborhood commercial uses, small multi-family houses and single families interspersed - the way small towns used to be."

"The county has put a tremendous investment into this," said Prince William Supervisor Maureen Caddigan, R-Dumfries. "When developers see the buildings are already down and the road is widened, they are going to want to come."

And that vision is to turn a roughly six-block area off U.S. 1 into the "Village of Triangle." The area is bordered by Old Triangle Road, Amidon Avenue, Squire Lane, Triangle Street, Post Street and parts of Fuller Heights Road.
